The Empowerment Column 2014: Personal Storms

Back in the day before modern pleasures, conveniences and luxuries our ancestors would retreat into caves at the onset of a storm and become still and patiently wait until the storm passes. They did not complain about it.  They did not argue with it.  They did not try to fight or resist it.  They accepted that storms are a permanent reality and chose to remain thankful for every minute to be alive, especially during the storm.  They were completely confident that the storm will pass and the sun will always return to rise again when it’s all over.

Even if everything they worked so hard to build or possessed was destroyed or wiped out they clung onto gratitude and never self pity.  They were grateful to be alive and for the opportunity or chance to build a brand new future.  They would behold the sense of that special calm tranquility or silent stillness that always came after the storm.

The most powerful and mighty storms involve strong winds, heavy rains, giant sized hail, intense blinding lightning, destructive tornados and thunder loud enough to smash windows.  If we’re at sea we get tossed around by gigantic swallowing waves.  For some there is a religious perception that the mightiest storms are a display of God’s anger with us.

Our personal storms are similar in description as we get sucked into predicaments or circumstances like an invisible tornado put us there.  We get tossed around from problem to problem, from relationship to relationship, from job to job and residence to residence sometimes as if we are riding on top of waves.  During our personal storms financial setbacks happen, damage to property or relationships happen.  Storms are actually the greatest teachers when it comes to our necessary lessons about forced detachment.

Once we achieve complete detachment from people and things we are finally free.  Attachment means we are trapped living in the ‘illusion of possession’ yet every funeral proves that nothing or no one belongs to us.  We all belong to ‘It’ and it does not belong to us nor does it answer to us.  It decides who wins and who loses, who lives and who dies.  It does not seek our approval to operate as it does.  It matters not if we like it or not because it makes no difference and it doesn’t change reality.

Our life remains a gift that comes loaded with infinite possibilities and unlimited opportunities.  We get to be alive.  We get to experience.  We get to choose and enjoy.  Storms are a permanent reality in the same way that things will get damaged and relationships of all kinds will be taken away from us.

When a building gets remodeled the old is destroyed like the damage from a storm in order to make way for the new.  Often times during surgery, the surgeon has to cut, tear and remove what causes the patient to experience pain and discomfort before they can heal and get better.  We may have experienced arguments that caused us to become closer afterwards.   Most of us feel better after a good crying session.  Crying can be compared to the heavy rains of a storm.  In both cases, there is purification or cleansing taking place.

We must remember just as our ancestors did that after our personal storms there will be a moment of peaceful calmness and that the sun will always rise again to bring or deliver a brand new day.  With this understanding that there will always be those damaging storms we now choose to live in the perception that we are causing possibility without any attachment to an outcome.  We live in a “Let Thy will be done Universe” where we yield to the power and presence of that greater something that makes all things new.  All of Life is forever unfolding in the direction of the greater good.  Let’s rejoice in this glorious and magnificent day.

Eternal Blessings

This week’s message is dedicated to the family, friends and everyone who was affected by the tragic shooting in Las Vegas this past week that took the lives of 2 police officers and a civilian.  May they all be blessed recipients of that perfect peace that passeth all human understanding as they are lifted into the accelerated healing that can only come from our Divine Source.
