San Diego Mayoral Candidates David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer Agree to Six Debates Ahead of February Election

David Alvarez 2Mayoral candidates and San Diego City Councilmembers David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer announced a scheduling agreement for debates in the special runoff election campaign.

The agreement came after more than 30 debates and forums were scheduled in the eight-week primary election ending Nov. 19. The top two finishers said they’ve agreed to participate in six debates to be held after the New Year.

“Kevin and I differ on a number of issues, but we can agree that voters deserve to hear about our records and our vision to lead San Diego,” said Alvarez. “Committing to these debates focused on major issues affecting our city will give voters a clear sense of where we stand.”

“I’m looking forward to joining David for a robust discussion about the issues that matter to voters,” said Faulconer. “San Diegans expect transparency and openness from their next mayor, and I’m confident that these debates will provide a forum to help residents decide who is the best choice to lead our great city.”

Alvarez and Faulconer have set a deadline for Friday, December 13, for debate requests to be submitted to the campaigns. Each debate must be broadcast with a major media outlet, including at least one with Spanish language media, in order to reach as many San Diegans as possible. The two candidates are encouraging community, advocacy and business groups to partner with the local media to host and televise the debates.

Alvarez and Faulconer would like to encourage media and community partners to focus on issues important to San Diegans in the debates, including:

  • Open Government and Transparency
  • United States-Mexican Border Region
  • City Finances and Budget
  • Environment and Sustainability
  • Neighborhoods and Community Planning
  • Economy and Jobs
  • Vision for San Diego

Both candidates are committed to debates that are inclusive of all San Diegans, nonprofits, institutions and businesses. They also encourage that the debates be free and open to the public, near public transportation centers, and spread throughout different parts of the City.

In addition to debates, Alvarez and Faulconer remain dedicated to meeting as many San Diegans as possible at community meetings, town councils, and at the front door between now and the election.
